Biscuits: What's your best and worst?

There's rarely a biscuit that I'll turn down, but I'll never ever eat rich teas.

I just don't understand them. Horrid, horrid things. I used to think I loved all biscuits, but I can't get on board with a rich tea. But, I know some of you out there will be shouting at your laptop screens about how yummy rich tea are. But in my world, there's always a much better biccy. There's never a rich tea in Domestic Sluttery HQ.

But there is a lot of shortbread. Oh yes. Shortbread is the king of biscuits in my eyes.

There's not much that divides people like their favourite biscuits. So for a bit of fun, tell us in the comments below which is your best biccy, and which is your worst? Are you a fan of rich tea? Or do bourbons do it for you? Do you change your mind on a regular basis? Sure, you could be spending the first day back at work doing that spreadsheet, but arguing about biscuits and cookies is much more fun.

I love all biscuits, don't think I've come across one I don't like! Ginger ones are the best though! Shortbread is great bu not for dunking so that's why it only gets to be in 2nd place.

I only ever eat Rich Tea's when I'm feeling sick but hungry - that dry, plain food your mum tell's you to eat, with a bit of sugar for energy!

Now Ginger Nuts, there's a proper biscuit...all the better dunked in a cuppa.

Ah, the biscuit tournament league table! Just last night, my beloved and I were lying in bed, arguing at length about biscuits (as you do). He claims the only solution is a football-style play-off, in which each biscuit is pitted against each other in a war to find the biscuit champion. Or a simple trumps system would do it. For instance, those nasty pink wafers trump rich teas, but would themselves be trumped by most other biscuits. Smiley Faces win Jammie Dodgers, but my favourite biscuits have got to be those apple crumble cookies. Or viennese whirls. A fancy biscuit of any kind will usually win the humble digestive or hobnob. Although I will admit a love of party rings and malted milks.

Bourbons are obviously the best, closely followed by choc digestives with the caramel layer.

Also, just gonna throw this out there, I do love a jaffa cake. But is it a biscuit?!

I mostly agree with you about Rich Teas. As far as I'm aware, they only exist so that dieters can trick themselves into thinking they can still eat biscuits. Put something on top of them, however, and they're quite nice: the chocolate ones are tasty with a cuppa, and you can't beat a Rich Tea covered in icing with silver balls on top. A real school fete special!

As for my faves? Never been a huge biscuit person, but I do like anything with currants in it so have a strange preference for those 'squished fly' biscuits that are really just shortcakes with currants. Hobnobs are quite satisfying too...

If Jaffa cakes are biscuits then those...but also ginger nuts for tea dunking...and then hob-nobs

If macaroons are biscuits, then those. I absolutely adore them, especially Laduree or Maison Blanc.

Rich tea biscuits are yummy! They have a simple, sweet elegance about them always surprises. And they are perfect for dipping in a hot cup of tea.

But no, they are not my favourite. That is reserved for Bourbons and they're almost crappy chocolateyness and followed very closely by Chocolate Digestives. How do they get that texture so right?! Mmmmmm.....

I don't like jammy dodgers. The biscuit bit is tasteless and you never get enough jam to make them worthwhile! Sainsbury's used to make a very tasty stem ginger biscuit coated with dark chocolate and I loved those. I love the little caramelised biscuits that you sometimes get with coffee, and also the little amaretti biscuits too. And it's hard to beat plain chocolate digestives. Rich tea biscuits get the thumbs down from me - and I think they're even more disgusting when you get them with chocolate on top!

As I'm now on a diet, all biscuits are a no-go. I could weep.

However as I'm *still* thinking as a fat person for the time being, I will say that I adore chocolate hobnobs and shortbread. Rich tea's have no real flavour, unless they're smothered in Philly cheese or peanut butter.

Totally with you on the rich teas. And on the shortbread now I think of it... Will now eat an apple to attempt to overcome urge to dash out of the office on a biscuit run...

An American but devoted Anglophile weighing in here. Chocolate Digestives are the shizz. the Plain ones especially but I will never turn down Milk. If I was to pick American cookies, it would either be standard chocolate Oreos (brilliant with milk for dunking, it's like a national childhood rite of passage) or anything chocolate filled that is made by Pepperidge Farm.

Oreos. Whip off the top part, lick out the delicious creamy-gooey-occasionally-chocolatey-inside and wolf down the biscuity parts. They're even better when they've been dunked into a glass of ice cold milk.

Also, I never say NO to a chocolate hobnob.

Rosalilium, I love your description of bourbons as having an 'almost crappy chocolateyness'. So true! They're like the biscuit equivalent of cheap advent calendar chocolate. Awesome.

Chocolate hobnobs. Every time. Mmmmm.... Followed by a ginger crunch cream. Ooh, I want a nice cuppa and some quality dunking time now...

Have to disagree about Rich Teas, sorry - I think they're fab, but as I don't have a particularly sweet tooth, I'm something of a biscuit puritan. Ginger nuts have to be top of the list though. Perfect for dunking.

Nonono, none of the above: it has to be Morrisons' (sorry, but honestly it's true) own Best Dark Chocolate Florentines. They are gorgeous. Fruity, coconutty and with lots of delicious dark chocolate. (Waitrose do rather a good florentine, too).
As for my worst: I hate Jammy Dodgers almost as much as I hate Jaffa Cakes. Nauseatingly sweet, and if that's jam I'm a banana.

I'm going to throw in one I've not seen yet, and my personal favourite - the incredibly unfashionable FIG ROLL - om nom nom nom!

Although having read the comments concerning chocolate hobnobs I now have a dangerous craving for them. I think biscuits are like cocktails - I've not yet found one I could say no to...

Those Caramel digestives might as well be crack cocaine as far as I'm concerned. Imposssible to stop eating them. Though controversially I'm not a huge fan of Bourbons and I loathe shortbread. (sorry Siany!) Oreos yes, and also Kimberleys but unless you're Irish you won't know what I'm on about :-)

For all you biscuit addicts, try the delicious, petite-sized offerings from the Miniature Bakery (my favourites are the chocolate macaroons and the chocolate viennese....yummy). I love them so much that I can (unfortunately) munch my way through the whole box.
But for a quick cuppa and a biccie, I can't resist a good old fashioned, cheap n' cheery custard cream!!

Hurrah for the fig roll mention (ALMOST healthy-ish).

I'd love to love ginger nuts but they are always too 'spicey' for me.

As for the "Is a Jaffa Cake a cake or biscuit" debate, I believe these orangey wonders have to gracefully withdraw from this best biccy competion as they are defined as a cake. The rule being cakes become hard when stale, biscuits go soft.

Oh Gail - Kimberley biscuits! Did you ever have the chocolate covered ones? I didn't like them quite as much as I like Mikado biscuits though - not those chocolate covered straws called Mikado, the Jacob's ones with the pink foam and jam. I can't imagine that they have a single natural ingredient. YUM!

I like the ruling on what constitutes a biscuit/cookie versus a cake. I do love a Jaffa Cake though.

CUSTARD CREAMS! I moved to America 5 1/2 years ago and I still dream of custard creams! I like Jammy Dodgers but totally agree with whoever up there that said they don't ever have enough jam in them to make them worthwhile. Chocolate hob nobs. Yum. And I think I might be alone in thinking that those pink wafer things are not that bad? Rich Teas need to die a painful death though, they are not worthy of being called a biscuit, really. I like pretty much any biscuit that has cream in it, or jam. And I love lemony flavo(u)red biscuits too.

Garibaldi, once dipped they become chewy. Downside is you don't get many in a pack so thhey go pretty quickly
