Top Ten Afternoon Tea Recipes

It should come as no surprise that we love afternoon tea. Domestic Sluttery is bursting at the seams with cakes, traybakes, tarts and biscuits that are all ideal afternoon tea fodder. The sky's the limit when it comes to what you can serve for tea. Sandwiches are a given, but we're not going to tell you how to make those, if you don't know by now then you can buy them! Everything else is fair game, just make it dainty.

Scones and jam are compulsory in afternoon tea, even a gluten free one. Whether you put the jam on top or under the cream is entirely up to you, but we highly recommend that the jam you use is strawberry and rhubarb.

Macarons are almost as a ubiquitous part of afternoon tea as the scone and we thoroughly agree with that. Our Day of the Dead macarons are brilliantly colourful and prove that macarons can be fun as well as elegant. Chocolate macarons are a delicious (and compulsary) addition, too.

Now that your scones and macarons are sorted, the rest is up to you. I'd love some mini fruit tartlets on my cake stand. Not cheesecake and not from London, London cheesecake might be confusingly named, but it's jammy, flaky and perfect for tea. Delicate pastry rounds with strawberries and cream would look beautiful on the stand and taste brilliant. Add a few strawberry stacks to your plate.

In addition to tea, you'll want a glass of something fizzy. Bucks fizz is a good idea, mix your champagne with fruit juice to extend your sobriety. DIY Bellinis are a fun way to serve your bubbles, everyone can choose their own fruit cocktail. For an elagant afternoon tea, the sort with proper china and ironed table cloths, you'll definitely want to serve a few Sussex Sparklers.
